Full plot (contains spoilers)
The five friends Matteo, Jonas, Chris (Luis Freitag), Ben, and Oliver dream of becoming famous as a boy band. They study at the Heartville University Pop Academy and prepare for the big talent contest, where they will perform as 5G. But songwriter Ben is going through an existential crisis and abruptly breaks up the band. The others try to get him back on track just as a really good ’90s vintage B-side goes viral. The artist is unknown. When the song suddenly plays in the middle of an argument in an elevator that had a serious accident 30 years earlier, the five friends fall through a time rift and are spat out in the 1990s—1995, to be precise. There, outside the elevator, they meet Mary Jane, who invites them to a house party. The five friends struggle to find their feet in the analog world. They try to come up with theories about how they can get back. Eventually, they decide to go to the party, where the mysterious ’90s song is played on the campus radio station. Their plan is to play the song in the elevator again, thereby triggering another leap through time. The next day, they race to the broadcast station, only to discover that it has been broken into and the tape stolen. As the story unfolds, they uncover the song’s history. It was Mary Jane’s revenge on her boyfriend, a basketball player who had treated her terribly. While the friends try to get the tape back, Ben grows close to Mary Jane, and the two compose songs together. During their recording sessions, they accidentally record over the song without realizing it. When the boys get into the elevator, they realize their mistake, but it is too late. They have prevented the terrible accident from happening, but now they themselves are trapped in a death trap. But when they play the last song Mary Jane and Ben composed, they end up back in the future. There, they take part in the talent contest and discover that Mary Jane, now Mrs. Robinson, is on the judging panel. After talking with Ben, she gives the prize to an up-and-coming singer-songwriter. Even so, 5G’s performance is a great success.
