When a property tycoon’s redevelopment plan threatens a Copenhagen neighborhood, its tenants must find a way to resist.
The story
In Copenhagen’s Christianshavn district, rumors that the old buildings on Amagergade will be demolished threaten the residents of two buildings and Emma, who runs the neighborhood pub across the street. Property speculator Hallandsen, backed by American investors, has nearly all the contracts and permits he needs to replace the old residential area with a shopping center and luxury hotel complex. He still needs approval from the Ministry of Construction and has not acquired two properties from their elderly owner, Mrs. Lorentzen. As the redevelopment threat looms, the tenants and Emma face a powerful business interest determined to reshape their street.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the Copenhagen district of Christianshavn, a rumor is circulating that the old buildings on Amagergade are to be demolished. This would affect the tenants of the two buildings managed by caretaker Meyer, as well as Emma’s neighborhood pub across the street, the Rat Hole (Rottehullet). Property speculator and construction tycoon Hallandsen, backed by American investors, has nearly all the necessary contracts and permits in hand. After clearing the old residential neighborhood, he wants to build a large shopping center and a luxury hotel complex on Amagergade instead, under the name “Hilarious Holyday.” Hallandsen still needs approval from the Ministry of Construction, and so far he has also been unable to acquire the properties at Amagergade 7 and 9 from their elderly owner, Mrs. Lorentzen, in order to finally own the entire neighborhood. To stop the planned development after all, Larsen, a tenant and petty criminal, forges and steals the last required documents at the Ministry of Construction. The other tenants in the buildings concerned and Emma, the pub owner, also know how to fight back, repeatedly outsmarting Hallandsen & Co. at every turn with great ingenuity. In the end, they drive the construction tycoons and investors to despair and force them to abandon their ambitious building project, saving their neighborhood and street from the threatened demolition.
