Ban wo chuang tian ya (1989)

Cat, a detective in the Serious Crime Unit, receives a tip from a former colleague and leads a team to bust an arms deal. After storming the trading post, they discover that the woman running the deal has been murdered. A three-year-old child crawls out from her arms; everyone else has fled without a trace. The police identify the dead woman as Lee Yuet-har. Cat leads his team to search her family home, where he meets her younger sister, Lee Suet-yee, and their elderly father. Following another lead to Yuet-har’s residence, they find that her accomplices have already destroyed the evidence. During the investigation, Cat comes across the people responsible. In desperation, he takes Suet-yee along in a high-speed chase, but they fail to catch them, and the two blame each other. They later discover that Yuet-har was the mistress of wealthy businessman Hung Chi-hang, and that Ka-ka, the child registered with no father listed, is in fact their illegitimate daughter. Hung Chi-hang is ruthless and cloaks himself in a charitable image, making it difficult to trace where the arms from the deal are going. Cat takes Lee Suet-yee with him to pursue the killer, helps her see Hung’s cold-heartedness, and also looks after Ka-ka. Their feelings for each other grow. Cat’s wife and son are dead, and his friend Big Mouth Nam is glad to see his relationship with Ah Suet developing. On Hung’s orders, Cannon kills an informant, but Cat fights back and injures him. Cannon vows revenge. Lee’s father is distressed by Yuet-har’s downfall and doesn’t know how to deal with a child, which frightens Ka-ka, who then goes missing. Cat helps search for her, while Lee Suet-yee’s ex-husband Ah Leung feels uncomfortable seeing the situation. Leung unilaterally asks Suet-yee to get back together with him and resents her growing closeness to Cat. While Cat and Suet-yee are inspecting the warehouse of Yuet-har’s boutique, they happen upon a group of Hung’s men retrieving the arms hidden inside and are attacked. Cannon is among them. After an exchange of gunfire, Cannon’s leg is broken and Cat is seriously wounded, but they also bust the arms-smuggling operation. The man in charge at the scene turns state’s evidence, and Hung Chi-hang is arrested. After Cat is discharged from the hospital, he wants to talk things over with Ah Leung. Leung refuses and confronts him with a cleaver. Just then, Cannon arrives to take revenge, grabs Leung, and forces Cat to come out. Cat is willing to die in Leung’s place, but Cannon goes on a rampage, killing indiscriminately. Cat has not recovered from his serious injuries and cannot hold his own. During their fight, a gas explosion occurs. Cannon dies in the blaze, while Cat and Leung are rescued. Leung sees that the relationship cannot be salvaged. Cat and Lee Suet-yee end up together.
