The story
After a torrid week-long honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel, free-spirited Corie Bratter and her husband Paul, a conservative, uptight young attorney, move into a fifth-floor Greenwich Village apartment that lacks an elevator. Corie works to turn the small, leaky space into a picturesque home while navigating the presence of their quirky neighbors. Among them is Victor Velasco, who befriends Corie and flirts with her. As the couple settles in, their highly passionate relationship begins to descend into comical discord as they struggle to reconcile their vastly different personalities and lifestyles.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Following a honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel, Corie Bratter and her husband Paul move into a fifth-floor Greenwich Village apartment. Corie decorates the space while Victor Velasco, a neighbor from the attic, befriends her and helps with repairs. Corie attempts to set up a dinner date between her mother, Ethel Banks, and Victor at an Albanian restaurant on Staten Island. The night ends in fatigue and an argument between Corie and Paul over their differing temperaments. On a snowy February night, Paul falls ill, and Corie demands a divorce, eventually kicking him out. She later discovers Ethel fell on icy stairs and spent the night at Victor's. Meanwhile, a drunken Paul wanders Washington Square Park. Corie finds him running barefoot and chases him to sober him up. Paul climbs onto the roof of their apartment and becomes terrified of falling. Corie convinces him to sing an Albanian folk song to calm down while she climbs up to help him down. A crowd, including Ethel and Victor, watches as they kiss and descend safely.
