A struggling playwright in 1941 Hollywood finds his creative block shattered by a mysterious neighbor and a series of violent events.

The story

In 1941, a struggling Broadway playwright named Barton Fink moves to Hollywood to write scripts for a film studio. Settling into the run-down Hotel Earle, he struggles to overcome a creative block while writing for a wrestling film. He becomes increasingly distracted by strange noises coming from the room next door, inhabited by a man named Charlie Meadows. As Fink seeks help from various associates to break through his writer's block, the line between his reality and the escalating tension of his surroundings begins to blur, forcing him to confront the unsettling atmosphere of his new environment.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1941, playwright Barton Fink moves to Hollywood to write for Capitol Pictures. While staying at the Hotel Earle, he struggles to write a wrestling script and becomes distracted by noises from his neighbor, Charlie Meadows. After a series of events involving a local novelist and his secretary, a murder occurs, and Meadows—revealed to be a serial killer named Karl 'Madman' Mundt—helps Fink dispose of the body. Following a meeting with his boss, Fink experiences a creative breakthrough and finishes his script in one sitting. However, he is soon confronted by police who accuse him of complicity with Mundt. During a fire at the hotel, Mundt kills the officers. Fink escapes with his script and a mysterious package. In a final meeting with his boss, his script is rejected as 'a fruity movie about suffering.' The film ends with Fink on a beach, where he encounters a woman who resembles a painting in his room, and they share a silent moment as a seagull falls into the water.
