Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film begins with a young Bruce Wayne training abroad before returning to Gotham to fight crime as Batman. He meets Andrea Beaumont, but after she leaves him with a 'Dear John' letter, he commits to his vigilante life for ten years. In the present, Batman interrupts a mobster, Chuckie Sol, who is killed by the Phantasm, a masked figure resembling the Grim Reaper. The Phantasm then murders another mobster, Buzz Bronski. Batman encounters Andrea at a cemetery, where she deduces his identity. Batman learns that the mobsters were bankrolled by Andrea's father, Carl Beaumont. A third mobster, Salvatore Valestra, fears for his life and hires the Joker to kill Batman. The Joker kills Valestra but rigs a camera to identify the killer, then triggers explosives. Batman eventually learns that Carl Beaumont was forced into hiding by the mob and that Andrea returned to Gotham to stop him from killing his former partners. It is revealed that Andrea is the Phantasm, seeking revenge for her parents. Andrea confronts the Joker at the abandoned Gotham World's Fair; Batman saves her, but she chooses to disappear with the Joker as the fair explodes. Bruce is left alone in the Batcave, finding Andrea's locket.
