The story
Klaus Engelhardt is a dreamer and a good-for-nothing who works as a car washer. After taking a wrong turn in his boss’s luxury car, he finds himself in a village that has been forgotten since the Second World War. Believing he has found the place where he can make his dreams come true, Klaus instead encounters envy and meanness. He finds affection in Martha Pansegrau, but she is the sister of Hartmut Pansegrau, the village mayor and judge. Hartmut regards Klaus as a threat to the community and tries to get rid of him, setting up a clash between the newcomer’s hopes and the village’s resistance.
