The story
Elliot Richards is a lonely, socially awkward man working at a San Francisco computer company. He harbors a deep crush on his colleague, Alison Gardner, but lacks the confidence to act on his feelings. After being ignored by his coworkers at a bar while trying to talk to her, Elliot declares he would give anything to be with her. This declaration is overheard by a seductive woman—the Devil—who offers him a contract: seven wishes in exchange for his soul. The film follows Elliot as he navigates these wishes, which the Devil intentionally complicates to frustrate his goals while he attempts to win Alison's affection.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Devil uses a computer simulation to identify Elliot Richards, a lonely man in San Francisco, as a target for a soul-selling contract. After Elliot expresses his desperation to be with his crush, Alison, the Devil offers him seven wishes. The first few wishes, including a trip to McDonald's, are complicated by the Devil's interference. As Elliot progresses through his wishes, he is eventually arrested and imprisoned, where he meets a 'friend' who encourages him to realize his true self. In a final confrontation, Elliot refuses to use his last wish for himself, instead wishing for Alison to have a happy life regardless of his presence. This selfless act voids the contract, and he is returned to Earth. He finds a new sense of confidence and, while he discovers Alison is dating someone else, he meets a new neighbor, Nicole, who shares his interests and becomes his new partner. The Devil and his 'friend' are seen observing him from the sidelines as he moves forward with his life.
