A mixed-race heiress navigates the rigid social hierarchies of 18th-century England while seeking a life of her own choosing.

The story

In 1761, Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay is born in the West Indies to a Royal Navy officer and an enslaved African woman. After her mother's death, she is taken to England and entrusted to the care of her father's uncle, Lord Mansfield, and his wife. Raised as a free gentlewoman alongside her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray, Dido faces the constraints of her mixed-race heritage. When Dido becomes an heiress, her family fears she will marry for wealth rather than status. To protect the family's reputation, Lord Mansfield arranges for her to remain at the estate as a keeper of the house, while she navigates a complex web of social expectations and secret desires.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay is born in 1761 in the West Indies to Captain Sir John Lindsay and Maria Belle. Following her mother's death, she is moved to England to live with her uncle, Lord Mansfield, and his wife. Dido is raised as a free gentlewoman with her cousin, Lady Elizabeth Murray. When Dido inherits a vast fortune, her family worries that her mixed-race background will lead to a marriage of lower status. Lord Mansfield decides she will live at the estate as a house keeper rather than being presented to society. However, Dido begins a secret correspondence with John Davinier, the local vicar's son, who is studying law under Mansfield. Dido helps her uncle with his correspondence regarding the Zong massacre, a case involving slaves thrown overboard from a slave ship. Despite the family's attempts to arrange a marriage for Dido with Oliver Ashford, she continues to see John in secret. After James Ashford insults her, Dido breaks off her engagement to Oliver. Eventually, Lord Mansfield discovers her relationship with John. After a legal ruling on the Zong case, Mansfield agrees to resume John's pupillage so he can become a lawyer. Dido and John eventually marry and have two sons, while Elizabeth also marries and has three children.
