Two girls navigate the challenges of pursuing professional football careers while navigating cultural expectations and family traditions.

The story

Eighteen-year-old Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra, a British Indian Punjabi Sikh living in Hounslow, London, is passionate about football despite her parents' preference that she focus on her studies. When she is befriended by Jules Paxton, a member of a local women's amateur football team, Jess is invited to try out for the team. Although her parents forbid her from joining, she continues to play in secret. The story follows her journey as she balances her secret passion for the sport with her family's expectations and the upcoming wedding of her older sister, Pinky.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra is a talented football player in London whose parents want her to focus on academics. She joins the Hounslow Harriers in secret, coached by Joe, an Irish former player. During a match in Germany, Jess and her friend Jules Paxton experience a moment of tension regarding their feelings for Joe. After her parents discover her secret, Jess is grounded. The conflict peaks when the team qualifies for a tournament final on the same day as her sister Pinky's wedding. Jess eventually attends the match and wins the game with a free kick, earning scholarships to study in California. Following a series of complications involving her parents' perceptions of her relationship with Jules and a lie from her friend Tony to secure her scholarship, Jess's father eventually gives his blessing. The film concludes with Jess and Jules heading to the United States, where they are seen at an airport with a cameo from David Beckham's lookalikes.
