Despite their communities’ hostility, Sebastian of Gschaid and Susanne of Millsdorf fall in love and marry, but are shunned by their respective villages. Their home life grows increasingly difficult, and Susanne eventually returns to Millsdorf, leaving their children, Sanna and Konrad, with their father. The children must make a long journey every weekend to see their mother, and they desperately want their family reunited. Full plot (contains spoilers)

At Christmas, a priest tells a family from the city the story of the mountain crystal. It is about the ancient feud between the two (fictional) mountain villages of Millsdorf and Gschaid in Vorarlberg. Despite the feud, Sebastian from Gschaid and Susanne from Millsdorf fall in love and marry, for which they are shunned by their respective village communities. The family’s situation becomes increasingly unbearable, and Susanne eventually returns to her home village, leaving the children, Sanna and Konrad, with their father. From then on, if they want to see their mother, they have to make the long journey to Millsdorf every weekend. Both desperately wish to bring their family back together. The old fairy tale about the mountain crystal, which can reunite lovers, comes to their aid. So the children set out in search of it and, after many hardships, finally find it. Meanwhile, search parties from each village set out to find the children. Once they succeed, the centuries-old feud is put to rest.
