The story
After eleven years in prison for manslaughter, former East German citizen Martin Schulz is released in 2000 into a reunified Germany he knows only from television. His family feels unfamiliar, and his wife, Manuela, is now with Wolfgang. Martin has not seen his eleven-year-old son, Rokko, for years, having chosen that separation himself. He wants to spend as much time as possible with his family, but Wolfgang is skeptical and hostile. Martin also reconnects with old friends, including Enrique, a former locksmith colleague who now drives a taxi. Hoping to make a new start, Martin studies for a taxi license with Manuela’s help while taking a job at a sex shop.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After eleven years in prison for manslaughter, former East German citizen Martin Schulz is released in 2000. He can barely find his way around in a now-reunified Germany that he has only seen on television, and even his family has become unfamiliar to him. His wife, Manuela, is now in a relationship with Wolfgang, and Martin has not seen their eleven-year-old son, Rokko, for years, at his own request. His wish to spend as much time as possible with his family meets with resistance from Wolfgang, who is skeptical and hostile toward the unfamiliar ex-convict. Meanwhile, Martin also reconnects with some of his old friends, including his former locksmith colleague Enrique, who now works as a taxi driver. Martin decides to take up the same profession and, with Manuela’s help, studies for the licensing exam. In the meantime, he takes a job at the sex shop owned by Victor, a former fellow inmate. He plans to use the money he earns there to take a vacation with his son. Secretly, he dreams of winning Manuela back. At first, everything seems to be going well, but then Martin learns that his criminal record disqualifies him from taking the taxi-driver exam. His dream falls apart, and Martin is utterly devastated. Shortly afterward, he is arrested over Victor’s illegal business dealings. At the last moment, Victor, who is on the run, turns himself in to the police to clear his friend. Martin feels as if he is in a time machine.
