Full plot (contains spoilers)
Berlin in the 1960s: Olaf and Horst are friends. Both work in the youth brigade at the BMHW metalworks in Berlin-Schöneweide. They are embittered by conditions at the plant, where they have to work with outdated machines and there is a constant shortage of materials. They protest against these failings. The only person who supports them is their older colleague, Paul Krautmann. They are unfairly criticized in the plant newspaper and feel insulted, prompting Olaf to attack the editor responsible, Hütte. Alongside his problems at work, Olaf also has worries in his private life: Karin, a singer who works in a large-scale kitchen, does not return his love. Only after she notices his persistent courtship and realizes that he is serious do they become a couple. The youth brigade eventually disbands, bringing a farewell to his friend Horst: he leaves to work at a major construction site.
