Bernie Tiede, a charismatic mortician in Carthage, Texas, becomes the companion of Marjorie Nugent, a wealthy and abusive woman. Nugent eventually forces Tiede to quit his job to be her full-time assistant. On November 19, 1996, after Nugent refuses to attend a production he is directing, Tiede shoots her four times and hides her body in a freezer. He spends the next nine months making excuses for her absence while spending $600,000 of her money on local businesses. When her body is discovered during a police search, Tiede confesses, citing her controlling nature. Despite the town's mixed feelings, a trial is held in San Augustine. Tiede is found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life. The film concludes with Nugent buried next to her husband while Tiede continues his social life in prison.
