As she faces a year abroad, a restless teenager navigates friendship, first love, and growing tensions with her father.
The story
Seventeen-year-old Kati dreams of traveling the world someday with her close friend Jo. They sneak out at night and drive country lanes in the VW van belonging to Kati’s relatively strict parents, talking, drinking, and smoking. Kati is also drawn to Mike, an admirer serving in the armed forces, though Jo sees that Mike does not love her. On Kati’s birthday, a letter arrives announcing that she has been accepted into a year-long exchange program in America. As Kati and Jo head out to meet Mike that night, his failure to remember her birthday and his departure for another disco leave Kati disappointed. Meanwhile, tensions between Kati and her father are growing.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film portrays the life of 17-year-old Kati, who would love to travel the world someday with her close friend Jo. Kati often climbs down from the balcony at night to meet Jo and tear around country lanes in the VW van belonging to her relatively strict parents. They philosophize, drink, and smoke along the way. Kati has an admirer, Mike, who is in the armed forces. She has a crush on him, but Jo realizes that he doesn’t love her. On her birthday, Kati receives a letter telling her she has been accepted into a year-long exchange program in America. That night, they hitchhike to the M1 disco to meet Mike there. But he hasn’t remembered her birthday and is already on his way to the next disco, while Kati and Jo have to walk home. Kati and her father argue more and more often because neither of them understands the other very well. One night, Kati and Jo get the VW van stuck at a construction site just short of their parents’ farm and can’t pull it free. Kati calls Mike, who is at a football-team meeting, but he doesn’t come to help. So her good friend Rocky helps her. He eventually arranges for Toni to bring a self-propelled slurry tanker to tow them out, and holds up Kati’s parents on the road so the girls won’t get caught. When Mike shows up at Kati’s late that night, she can barely forgive him, and breaks up with him the next day. Soon afterward, Kati leaves. As they say goodbye, she overcomes her hesitation and hugs her father all the tighter. Rocky, who is in love with Kati, just misses her and cycles after the bus until Kati finally gets off and comes back.
