The story
High school junior Ben Manibag is an overachieving Asian American teenager living in an affluent suburb of Orange County, California. While striving for academic success and athletic goals, Ben leads a double life of petty crime with his best friend Virgil Hu and Virgil's cousin Han Lue. When Ben is recruited by a senior to participate in a schoolwide cheating operation, the group begins to earn a small fortune. However, as they escalate their activities into more serious crimes like stealing computer parts and selling drugs, Ben finds himself struggling with a growing cocaine addiction and the pressure of external expectations.

Ben Manibag, an overachieving student in Orange County, balances his academic goals with a secret life of petty crime alongside friends Virgil Hu and Han Lue. After joining a cheating ring led by Daric Loo, the group earns money but eventually escalates to selling drugs and stealing. Ben develops a cocaine addiction while trying to navigate his feelings for a cheerleader, Stephanie, who is dating a private school student named Steve. The group eventually agrees to rob Steve's parents' villa. On New Year's Eve, they attack Steve; during the struggle, a gun discharges, and Ben beats Steve to death with a baseball bat. They bury the body in a friend's backyard. After a period of guilt and a suicide attempt by Virgil, Ben decides to keep the secret. He later encounters Stephanie, who is looking for Steve, and they kiss as Ben reflects on the point of no return.
