Full plot (contains spoilers)
After an argument with her father, little Pina runs away from home. She has also upset her best friend, Konstanze. The cause is her walnut flute, whose sound seems to delight only Pina, because she believes it is a magic flute. Feeling misunderstood by everyone, Pina plans to make a wish swap with Santa Claus, which prompts Beutolomäus, Santa’s talking sack of presents, to look after the child. Pina gets better and better at playing the flute, and suddenly the people around her seem happy with her music. But the shady showwoman Miranda notices this too and tries to get hold of the magic flute. When she succeeds by trickery, however, she discovers that she cannot produce a sound from it, and that only Pina seems able to play it. Miranda lures the child with an offer to join her magical show and then use the proceeds to help her father with his financial problems. Even Beutolomäus is initially enthusiastic, but he quickly realizes that Miranda does not want to help Pina—she only wants to help herself. What’s more, she intends to abduct Pina to South America. So the two decide not to stay with Miranda. Since Pina’s parents and Santa Claus are already searching for them, Miranda cannot stop Pina from leaving either. Miranda’s assistant gives Pina’s father the day’s takings so he will not call the police. This leaves him unexpectedly with money again, and he does not have to close his shop. Happy that their daughter is back, the Nussbaums celebrate Christmas joyfully.
