Full plot (contains spoilers)
Susanne Podiak is married to the wealthy Christian. He regards his wife as his property, is jealous, and regularly beats her brutally. Susanne wants to leave him, but is afraid of him and eventually decides to fake her suicide and start a new life. During a voyage they take together, she puts her plan into action and makes it look as though she jumped overboard. Her husband then declares her dead, but soon finds clues that she is still alive and hires a private detective to track her down. In reality, Susanne leaves the ship under a new identity and lives in an old wooden cabin by a lake that belonged to her parents. She decides to repair her father's boat. There she meets Michael, who also lives in the countryside and saves her life, and the two fall in love. From a friend who was also on the ship, she learns that Michael is actually the private detective her husband hired. Her husband finds her and lies in wait for her in her cabin. He beats her brutally when she refuses to go back with him. Michael comes to her aid, but her husband knocks him down. She flees the cabin, and her husband follows her, falling onto the sharp points of an anchor lying on the ground. He is fatally injured and falls into the water. Susanne then says goodbye to Michael and sails away in her boat.
