A reluctant young vampire flees to America and finds himself navigating school, romance, and a vampire hunter's pursuit.
The story
Edwin Wolfenstein is a vampire who refuses to bite or kill, disappointing his father. When vampire hunter Abraham van Hellbring attacks the family’s Transylvanian castle, Edwin and his relatives flee to America, where Edwin hopes to meet Fella, his online acquaintance. Settling into the Hysteria Lane neighborhood and a new school proves difficult. Edwin discovers that Fella is not the blonde beauty in the photo; that image belongs to Sally Convally, the school’s popular beauty. As Edwin struggles to fit in and clashes with school snob Cookie Dent, Fella invites him to participate with her in the school musical, Romeo and Juliet. Edwin, however, is focused on winning Sally’s attention.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Edwin Wolfenstein is a vampire, but in his father Vladimor’s eyes, he is a disgrace because he simply refuses to bite and kill. Instead, he likes singing and chatting with his beautiful online acquaintance, Fella. His brother Günni is no more impressed with him and usually just calls him “Uschi.” But then vampire hunter Abraham van Hellbring storms the Transylvanian castle of the last three vampires, and the Wolfensteins have to flee. Edwin knows where to go: to America, to be with his Fella. After a few adjustment problems in the “Hysteria Lane” neighborhood, Edwin quickly realizes that Fella is nothing like the blonde beauty from the internet. Instead, she is an ugly, drab little mouse; the girl in the picture was the conceited school beauty, Sally Convally. Edwin also has trouble winning over his new classmates, and immediately clashes with the school snob, Cookie Dent. The school is putting on a musical production of Romeo and Juliet, and Fella wants to take part with Edwin. Edwin, however, only wants to win Sally over. When Fella realizes what Edwin is, she tries to blackmail him, but he now throws himself wholeheartedly at Sally. In revenge, Fella emails van Hellbring. Van Hellbring gets the Wolfensteins under his control, but then finds himself facing Fella and her mother. At last, Edwin and Fella grow closer, and he tells her that it was his fault his mother died, and that van Hellbring wants revenge on him for it. They get together. Sally has figured out what Edwin is and wants him to bite her so she will never grow old. But he refuses. Even so, he still wants to sing with her in the musical, although Sally cannot sing at all. She persuades Günni to transform her. The musical performance becomes the setting for the showdown. Van Hellbring makes a Florian Silbereisen robot sing; its music causes the vampires pain. Edwin manages to defeat it, but in the process injures Fella, who was trapped inside the robot. The only way he can save her is by biting her, and he has to overcome his reluctance for the first time. She becomes a vampire and, as a result, beautiful. Van Hellbring falls victim to the misunderstood milkman, who turns out to be a vampire. The whole of Hysteria Lane is turned into vampires, and Fella and Edwin sing together. His father gets together with her mother, and even Günni enjoys life in the suburbs.
