Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film begins with a flashback set ten years earlier. Alex Haller can still see and is working on an investigation with his colleague at the time, Grischka Tanner. The two clearly get along well. They enter an apartment building and find a dying old woman in one of the apartments, along with her young grandson. The perpetrator is still there. He knocks Alex down and flees to the roof, with Grischka following him. There, he stumbles and slips, but manages to hang on with one hand. Grischka refuses to help him, despite Alex’s urgent pleas. The perpetrator falls to his death. After this episode, the main story begins. Alex is enthusiastically enjoying a concert by himself at a club and sends Niko a little glimpse of it on his smartphone. Niko is with a woman (Grischka), and Alex cannot persuade him to come to the club too. Later, Alex calls a taxi to take him home. A taxi parked nearby picks him up and drives off. During a conversation led mostly by Alex, the driver offers him a bottle of water. He drinks from it and quickly feels the effects of a sedative; at the same time, he hears noises coming from the trunk. The driver does not respond to his questions. Alex manages to call Niko. Niko is occupied with the woman and does not answer Alex’s call at first, but he is surprised by Alex’s unusual alcohol consumption, so he tries to call him back. After a brief scuffle, the driver throws Alex’s smartphone onto the road. Alex eventually manages to escape from the car, landing on the road, bleeding. The supposed taxi driver “takes care of” the bound man in the trunk and searches unsuccessfully for his insulin. Alex is then found in hospital. Niko, Mia, and Lassmann realize that this is not the result of alcohol consumption, but a mysterious crime involving a kidnapping. Mia does not take the story very seriously and assumes everything will become clear. Only after Alex wakes up and repeatedly says the Latin sentence “Iustitia est ius debilioris” (“Justice is the right of the weaker”) do memories come back to Mia. That same day, a woman opens a container and tries to give insulin to the kidnapped Georg Fiedler, but he is already dead. This was not part of the plan, and the woman is overwhelmed. Mia talks to Alex about the Latin sentence and connects it to the case from ten years earlier. After Alex reported Grischka for failing to help the murderer, Grischka—who was already friends with Mia at the time—was convicted. Grischka said the sentence in Alex’s presence. Mia had also disapproved of Alex’s actions back then. He could have kept quiet, but Alex believes that the police serve the law, not arbitrariness. Later, Alex discovers that Grischka completed training as a psychotherapist in prison and has since worked as a counselor for an organization supporting female victims of trauma. Alex and Niko go to the counseling center together, where they are watched. They meet the therapist, Grischka, and it becomes clear how she knows Niko and Alex. Melanie and Britta leave the counseling center, watched by Eva, and get into her taxi. Later, Eva goes to the police and has her vehicle inspected. It turns out to be the very car Alex rode in, but Eva denies all the allegations. Mia is skeptical of the accusations, but the many apparent coincidences make her doubt herself. Mia and Lassmann then go to a gas station, where an attendant with diabetes has gone missing. He is separated from his wife and is extremely short-tempered and violent. Alex attends a guided tour of the Freud Museum and afterward asks Anna Bernays, the blind tour guide, what mistake Freud might have made. She alludes to Freud’s underestimation of women. After the visit to the gas station, Mia and Lassmann go to the home of Melanie Fiedler, the missing man’s ex-wife. The front door has been damaged, and she is visibly afraid. She gives terse answers to questions about her ex-husband. A little later, it emerges that Alex and Niko have found the dead Fiedler in the container, after Alex received the container key from an unknown person. It then becomes clear that Fiedler knew his murderer, and that Melanie Fiedler is in therapy with Grischka. Mia and Lassmann go to Eva’s house and want to question her in her husband’s presence. Eva successfully manages to get out of the situation. During a therapy session with Grischka, Alex speaks with Melanie. Soon afterward, Eva confesses to the police, claiming that she was the driver on the night of the kidnapping. Alex’s memories slowly begin to return, and he doubts her confession. Markus Beck picks up his wife Eva from the police station, since her confession is untenable in light of his alibi. A little later, his brutality toward her and his jealousy become apparent. Niko and Alex go to the counseling center, and Niko obtains information about the clients. They then see on footage recorded by Daniela, a climate activist, that Britta approaches the gas station. Alex remembers an earlier rape complaint in which Britta accused Dr. Kern, a doctor, but lost the case. Kern is the doctor who operated on Alex’s eyes back then and with whom Alex initially stayed in contact—until he witnessed Britta attack Kern. That attack, however, was a consequence of Kern’s sexual assault of Britta. That evening, Alex is drugged and kidnapped outside his home. Meanwhile, Eva has again been beaten by her husband. Lassmann discovers in the videos that Britta was the driver and that Melanie lured her ex-husband away from the gas station. Melanie and Britta have now kidnapped Alex and Markus, Eva’s husband, and taken them both to an unfinished high-rise building. Melanie does not want to be involved any longer and leaves at Britta’s insistence. Soon afterward, Markus and Britta fight; Markus falls into the depths, and Britta is badly injured. Meanwhile, Niko and Grischka are on their way to Alex, who managed to alert them without being noticed. In the end, it becomes clear that Britta had planned everything to hold those responsible to account. Alex was meant to witness Markus’s confession during the second kidnapping. Alex could confirm that Britta was responsible for Markus’s death, but decides to act in her favor and say that he saw nothing.
