Stranded at an airport after her boyfriend blocks her bank card, Lotte must choose between a restrictive relationship and an uncertain new life.
The story
Lotte, in her mid-thirties, is in a committed relationship with Rainer, who increasingly makes plans without considering her needs. She wants to concentrate on a new job before having a child, while he has effectively taken control of their life together. Seeking space to think, Lotte heads to the airport for a short break. When she calls Rainer to explain how she feels, he blocks her bank card, leaving her unable to buy a ticket. At the airport café she meets Henrik, a man rejecting conventional life who hopes to begin again in Australia despite being afraid of flying. He offers Lotte his spare plane ticket, forcing her to weigh an unpredictable path toward independence against returning to the security of her constrained relationship.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lotte, in her mid-thirties, is in a committed relationship with her yuppie-like boyfriend, Rainer. Over time, Rainer has gained the upper hand in the relationship and gives his girlfriend hardly any freedom. He plans his life without taking her needs into account: Lotte wants to focus on her new job first, and only afterward does she want to have Rainer’s child. She goes to the airport to clear her head on a short vacation. All Lotte really wants is to relax for a little while, catch her breath, and think about Rainer’s perfect life plan, in which she has virtually no say. But the spontaneous getaway comes to nothing: when Lotte unwisely calls Rainer from the airport to tell him how she feels and explain herself, he promptly blocks her bank card before she can even buy a ticket. At the airport café, stranded Lotte meets Henrik, who has opted out of conventional life. He has had his car scrapped and thrown all the furniture from his apartment down a rubbish dump, and now wants to start a new life in Australia despite his fear of flying. On the spur of the moment, he invites Lotte to go with him and offers her a spare plane ticket. Lotte is now faced with a difficult decision. Should she risk taking the step toward a life of her own, but one full of risks, or return to her secure but restrictive relationship with Rainer? The film premiered at the 2007 Berlinale.
