A disgraced Manhattan socialite must navigate a new life of poverty and deception after her husband's financial crimes leave her destitute.
The story
Jeanette "Jasmine" Francis, a wealthy Manhattan socialite, suffers a nervous breakdown and faces heavy debts following her husband's arrest for defrauding clients. Forced to leave her affluent life behind, she seeks refuge in the apartment of her working-class sister, Ginger, in San Francisco. Jasmine struggles to adapt to her new reality, dealing with her sister's disapproval and her own declining mental state. Despite her lack of income, she attempts to reinvent herself by seeking out new social connections and considering a career in interior design, all while grappling with the memories of her former life.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After her husband Hal Francis is arrested for fraud and subsequently dies by suicide, Jasmine moves to San Francisco to live with her sister Ginger. Flashbacks reveal that Hal swindled Ginger and her husband Augie out of $200,000, destroying their marriage. Jasmine, now struggling with heavy debt and alcohol abuse, tries to find work but is harassed by a dentist. Her situation changes when she meets Dwight Westlake, a wealthy diplomat. She lies to him, posing as an interior designer and claiming her husband was a surgeon who died of a heart attack. While she develops a romance with Dwight, Ginger reconciles with her mechanic boyfriend, Chili, after realizing she was influenced by Jasmine's elitism. The truth about Jasmine's lies is exposed when Augie confronts her outside a jewelry store, leading Dwight to call off their engagement. Jasmine eventually learns of Hal's many affairs and reveals she was the one who called the FBI on his fraudulent dealings. The film ends with Jasmine returning to her sister's apartment, where she remains in a state of internal turmoil, eventually walking to a park bench to mutter to herself.
