Full plot (contains spoilers)
The ss Rotterdam is plagued by ghosts who scare the guests half to death. As a result, the guests leave early, and the ship is in financial trouble. Lucas is hired to drive the ghosts away. In return, he is allowed to stay on the ship for free with his family. When his daughter Sanne goes looking for her runaway little brother, Thomas, she encounters the ghost Bobby. Bobby turns out not to be as bad as the other ghosts. When Sanne finds a communicator her father has left behind, she discovers that she can not only see the ghosts, but also talk to them. The ghosts can also choose to make themselves visible and audible temporarily. Sanne tries to calm the ghosts down so that her father can help them move on peacefully. When this takes too long for the ship’s management, Eric Masters is hired to drive the ghosts away. The only problem is that Eric’s method is not very ghost-friendly. The ghosts realize that Lucas’s method is better and, through Bobby, call on Sanne and her father for help. It turns out that the ghosts died in a fire on the ship in the 1960s. They no longer remember their names or what jobs they did, but Sanne finds this information in the ship’s museum and tells them. They are all very interested (though one is disappointed to learn about the lowly position she held), and become stronger from knowing this. Bobby is briefly reunited with his mother, who is also on the ship. For this to happen, Bobby must materialize, with the consequence that he then has to move on to the afterlife sooner than he otherwise would. He and his mother are at peace with this; he is ready.
