The story
In 1988, a teenager named Maren Yearly living in Virginia experiences a compulsive, violent episode and subsequently moves to Maryland with her father. After her father leaves her with a cryptic tape detailing her history of cannibalistic urges, Maren decides to travel to Minnesota to find her mother. Along the way, she encounters Sully, an experienced 'eater,' and later meets Lee, a young man who shares her secret. The two begin a cross-country road trip together, developing a deep romantic connection while navigating the dangers and isolation of their shared condition as they travel through the American heartland.

In 1988, Maren Yearly, a teenager in Virginia, is forced to move to Maryland after a violent incident. Her father leaves her with a tape explaining her history as a cannibal. Seeking her mother in Minnesota, she meets Sully, a fellow 'eater,' and later Lee, a man who shares her condition. The two fall in love while traveling across the U.S. in his truck. Along the way, they encounter other 'eaters' and eventually reach Maren's grandmother, who reveals her mother is in a psychiatric hospital. After a series of encounters with others who share their secret, Maren and Lee eventually settle in Michigan. The story concludes when Sully breaks into their apartment; in the ensuing struggle, Lee is fatally wounded. Maren ultimately fulfills his final wish by consuming him 'bones and all.'
