The story
A brutal murder in the small European coastal town of Kaalbringen is followed shortly afterward by an equally brutal killing in Maardam. The two towns are gripped by terror as the identity of the murderer remains unknown, along with when the killer might strike again. Van Veeteren and his colleagues take on the investigation, facing the possibility that the murders are either coincidences or carefully planned. They must try to solve the crimes and find the murderer before another attack.
