A geophysicist returns to his Harz birthplace to help save a mine whose sealed tunnel is linked to his father’s reported death.

The story

Geophysicist Dr. Leonard Gehra returns after many years to Buchenrode, his birthplace in the Harz Mountains near the former inner-German border, to help save entrepreneur Friedrich Türnitz’s unprofitable mine. His childhood friend Kathrin hires him to search for silver. The Regina tunnel he is assigned to investigate has been closed by the mining authority since 1978, and it remains shut because of the danger of collapse. Leonard’s father was supposedly killed there in a mining accident in June 1978, making the investigation personal.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Geophysicist Dr. Leonard Gehra is supposed to help save entrepreneur Friedrich Türnitz’s unprofitable mine. This brings Gehra back after many years to his birthplace, Buchenrode in the Harz Mountains, near the former inner-German border, where his mother still lives. When he arrives at the mine, he meets his childhood friend Kathrin, who hired him to search for silver. The Regina tunnel he is supposed to investigate has been closed by the mining authority since 1978, and the closure will not be lifted because of the further danger of collapse. Leonard’s father was supposedly killed there in a mining accident in June 1978. Despite the closure, Leonard sends a robot into the Hohberg to investigate through a side entrance, and discovers that nothing there has collapsed. The mine plans are also incomplete. As he investigates the past, he comes across his father’s Stasi file, which documents his death while fleeing the GDR and his betrayal by an informant codenamed Brocken. No one will tell Leonard who this informant was, however. Only when Leonard is alone with Türnitz in the mine building, searching for Türnitz’s son, does he learn that he himself—as a child playing in the sandbox—had told his friend Kathrin about the planned escape. Kathrin, in turn, had told her father, a police officer who was the informant Brocken; neither child had understood the significance of this information. It was only through Türnitz’s influence that Leonard went to a boarding school instead of a children’s home, and his mother was able to leave prison earlier.
