An inventive, energetic schoolboy struggles to thrive in a classroom that expects him to sit still.

The story

Brammetje is beginning Year 3, equipped with notebooks for his inventions and impressive words. Intelligent and imaginative, he nevertheless has trouble sitting still and concentrating on schoolwork, bringing him into conflict with his teacher, Mr. Vis. When Brammetje rescues a fly that Mr. Vis is about to swat, he is punished for leaving his seat. He dreams of inventing a rocket bus, and his mother encourages him to work on arithmetic as a step toward that ambition. At school and at home, the question of how best to handle Brammetje’s restless energy creates strain.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Brammetje Baas is starting Year 3. He is intelligent and keeps one notebook for his inventions and another for impressive, difficult words, all neatly numbered. He has trouble sitting still and concentrating on tasks, such as the ones he has to do at school. This causes friction with his teacher, Mr. Vis (René Groothof). Brammetje also saves a fly—which has compound eyes, one of the inventions in his collection—that Mr. Vis wants to swat. Brammetje catches it in a glass and releases it outside, but gets punished because he was supposed to stay in his seat. Brammetje wants to invent a rocket bus one day. His mother tells him that he will need to be good at math, which motivates him to try harder at his arithmetic problems. One day, Brammetje climbs onto a cupboard. As Mr. Vis tries to get him down, he falls and suffers a complicated leg fracture—a word combination Brammetje adds to his collection. There is talk of Brammetje perhaps transferring to another school. His parents also sometimes argue about how to handle him. Once, he is “school-sick” (another word for his collection), and one day he runs away; he is later found in a park. A substitute teacher, Mr. Mark (Egbert-Jan Weeber), arrives. He is more understanding about children not being able to sit still for so long and sometimes lets the whole class walk around. Later, Mr. Vis returns part-time. Things are better now: Brammetje has apologized to Mr. Vis (although, according to Brammetje, it was not really his fault that Mr. Vis fell), and he is sometimes allowed to carry things to other classrooms or go outside for a quick run around.
