When Eva’s search for her lost earbuds leads her to a letter thrown from a villa window, she is drawn into a mystery involving her father.

The story

Upset by her parents’ frequent arguments, Eva hopes to make them understand how unhappy she feels. With help from her friend Jackie and Jackie’s brother Thomas, she makes a plan and hides in her parents’ hotel. After realizing she left her earbuds in neighbor Brandsema’s garden, she goes to retrieve them and catches a letter thrown from a villa window. Brandsema catches her and has her locked up. He later tells her that her father works for him. Eva doubts this, but promises not to go to the police and is allowed to go home.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Eva’s parents argue a lot, and this upsets her. She wants them to realize that she is there too, and that she feels unhappy when things are like this. With help from her friend Jackie and Jackie’s brother Thomas, she comes up with a plan. She hides in her parents’ hotel. Once there, she realizes that she left her earbuds in the garden of their neighbor, Brandsema. When Eva goes to look for them, she catches a letter thrown out of the villa window. A little later, she sees a man being shot outside. When the neighbor catches her, he has her locked up. A few hours later, he tells her that her father works for him. Eva doesn’t really believe this, and would rather not believe it either. But the neighbor knows her name, as well as Jackie’s and Thomas’s. She promises Brandsema that she won’t go to the police, and afterward he lets her go home. She tells the police and her parents that she had been up in the attic at home the whole time. After all, she had been angry because her parents argued so much. She makes her friends promise never to go to the police and tells them what really happened. But when she and her friends investigate, they come across a lot of clues suggesting that her father really does work for Brandsema. The letter Eva had opened also turns out to be a list of suspicious names. One day, Eva asks her father directly whether he works for Brandsema, but he says that he is actually working as a spy for the police. Her father is then taken from his office to Brandsema’s boat. Eva goes after him after Jackie and Thomas call her; they happen to be at the marina when her father arrives. This time, she does call the police, and she and Jackie and Thomas chase after her father in a motorboat. At the last moment, they save him from a hired killer. The police, alerted to what is happening, take Brandsema’s hired killer away. Later, when Eva’s family and Jackie and Thomas’s family are gathered together to raise a toast, the police say they don’t have enough evidence to have the big boss, Brandsema, arrested. Then Eva produces the letter, whose confidentiality she had violated. It gives them enough evidence, and Brandsema is finally arrested at home. Her parents promise that things will be more pleasant at home again.
