Two high-school cheerleading teams prepare for a national competition while navigating issues of plagiarism and personal identity.

The story

Torrance Shipman is a senior at Rancho Carne High School in San Diego. Her cheerleading squad, the Toros, is aiming for a sixth consecutive national title. After being elected team captain, Torrance faces a challenge when a teammate is injured and replaced by Missy Pantone, a skilled gymnast from Los Angeles. The atmosphere shifts when Missy accuses the Toros of plagiarizing their routines from a rival team, the East Compton Clovers. As the competition intensifies, Torrance must navigate the complexities of leadership, the ethics of their performance, and her growing connection with Missy's brother, Cliff, all while preparing for the high-stakes national competition.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Torrance Shipman, a senior at Rancho Carne High School, becomes captain of the Toros cheerleading squad. After a teammate is injured, she is joined by Missy Pantone, who reveals that the Toros' routines were stolen from the East Compton Clovers. Torrance faces a dilemma regarding the stolen routines while dealing with a growing attraction to Missy's brother, Cliff. After a series of setbacks, including a mistreatment by a choreographer and a realization about the Clovers' lack of funding, the Toros and Clovers eventually reach the finals of the national competition in Daytona Beach. Despite the Toros' long-standing dominance, the Clovers emerge victorious. The two squads part with mutual respect, and Torrance and Cliff share a kiss as the Toros celebrate their season.
