When police commander Tilda Broll is abducted and buried in the woods, her stepson Max races to find her while confronting a jailed fertility specialist.

The story

Police Commander Tilda Broll is abducted and buried in a box in the woods, able to reach the outside world only by mobile phone. She contacts her stepson Max, a gravedigger, and identifies Professor Leopold Wagner as the likely culprit: a fertility specialist she helped send to prison eighteen years earlier. But colleague Meral’s research suggests Wagner could not have committed the crime because he remains incarcerated. As police try to trace Tilda’s phone, Max and his friend Baroni visit Wagner in prison, where he denies involvement. The investigation turns toward the possibility that someone has enabled the prisoner to leave temporarily.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Police Commander Tilda Broll is trapped in darkness after being abducted. Her only connection to the outside world is a mobile phone, which she uses to contact her stepson, Max Broll, a gravedigger. Tilda was overpowered in her apartment by a man and buried in a box in the woods. According to Tilda, the perpetrator is Professor Leopold Wagner, known as “the Baby Maker,” a specialist in artificial insemination whom she put behind bars eighteen years earlier. Wagner had always used his own sperm for the inseminations. When his wife found out, he drove her into a tree. At Wagner’s trial, it was one person’s word against another’s, but the judge gave more credence to Tilda’s testimony. According to the research of Tilda’s colleague Meral, Wagner could not have been the perpetrator, since he is still in prison. The police try to locate Tilda’s phone so they can search the woods. Meanwhile, Max and his friend Baroni visit Wagner. Wagner denies abducting Tilda, particularly as he is being held in a high-security wing. Max believes Wagner found a way to get out. According to Meral’s colleague Paul, Wagner’s 38 children, conceived through artificial insemination using his sperm, all have alibis for the time of the crime. The next day, Max and Baroni visit Wagner in prison again. With the help of prison guard Vinzenz, they threaten to suffocate Wagner with plastic sheeting, but he still gives them no information about Tilda’s whereabouts. Max also accuses prison director Lanzinger of having one of his guards bribed by Wagner to let him leave the prison temporarily. Soon afterward, Max’s girlfriend Hanni is suffocated with plastic sheeting. Tilda tells Max to get rid of the sheeting. She also tells him that she, too, was artificially inseminated by Wagner. According to the emergency doctor, there were no signs of external violence on Hanni, and she is said to have died of a heart attack. Vinzenz denies having anything to do with Hanni’s murder or with Wagner’s temporary releases. According to Vinzenz, they should talk to prison director Lanzinger about it. Lanzinger sends them back to Wagner, but Wagner merely tells Max to start digging two graves. Baroni discovers that the wife of prison director Lanzinger was also a patient of Wagner’s. The Lanzingers’ savings were spent on all sorts of attempts at artificial insemination, and from their perspective Wagner was their last chance to have a child. In exchange for the insemination, Director Lanzinger had arranged for Wagner to leave the prison temporarily and had also driven him around. However, he does not know where Tilda was buried. In the meantime, Wagner disappears from prison. Max tries to provoke Wagner’s pride in a television interview and draw him out. Soon afterward, Max gets a call from Wagner, who offers him a life-for-life exchange: if Max dies, Tilda will live. Wagner gives Max a note with Tilda’s location so that the police can later find it on Max’s body. Wagner tells Max to jump from the church tower, but Baroni interrupts him, threatening to drown one of Wagner’s children. Broll and Baroni manage to overpower Wagner. The police are eventually able to free Tilda Broll.
