Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is a semi-documentary account of the life of João Pedro Teixeira, a peasant leader from Paraíba who was assassinated in 1962. Because of the military coup, filming was interrupted in 1964. The Galileia sugar plantation was surrounded by police forces. Part of the crew was arrested on the grounds of “communism,” and the rest scattered. Work resumed 17 years later, with testimonies collected from the peasants who had worked on the original filming, as well as from João Pedro’s widow, Elizabeth Altino Teixeira, who had lived underground since December 1964, separated from her children. In this way, the story of João Pedro and the Peasant Leagues of Galileia and Sapé was reconstructed.
