An aspiring teenage singer must navigate the complexities of a prestigious summer music camp while keeping her humble origins a secret.
The story
Shy singer Mitchie Torres and her family are unable to afford the fees required to attend Camp Rock, a summer music camp. Her mother, Connie, a chef, is hired to cater food for the camp, which enables Mitchie to attend at a discounted rate. Upon arrival, Mitchie meets fellow camper Caitlyn Gellar, an aspiring music producer. Meanwhile, Shane Gray, the spoiled lead singer of the pop music trio Connect 3, returns to Camp Rock to rehabilitate his public image. He becomes obsessed with finding the girl with "the voice" after overhearing her singing in a hall, leading to a series of interactions between the two performers as they navigate the competitive environment of the music camp.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Mitchie Torres attends Camp Rock by having her mother work as a caterer, but she lies to her peers about her status to fit in. She befriends Caitlyn Gellar, but their friendship is strained when Mitchie fails to defend Caitlyn during a dispute with the popular Tess Tyler. Shane Gray, a famous pop star, is also at the camp and becomes intrigued by Mitchie's voice. After a period of cooperation, Tess discovers Mitchie's secret and exposes her, leading to Mitchie being ostracized. Tess then frames Mitchie and Caitlyn for theft, resulting in them being banned from activities until the final competition, the Final Jam. During the competition, several campers refuse to perform with Tess. At the finale, Mitchie and Caitlyn are allowed on stage, where Mitchie reveals her talent and reconciles with Shane. They perform together, and Tess eventually apologizes for her actions. In an extended ending, Caitlyn invites the other girls to a recording studio.
