A graduate student's research into urban legends leads her to a terrifying truth about a vengeful, hook-handed spirit.
The story
Helen Lyle, an anthropology graduate student at the University of Illinois Chicago, is researching urban legends and folklore for her thesis. Her investigation leads her to the legend of the "Candyman," a hook-handed ghost of an African-American artist who supposedly appears whenever his name is chanted five times in the mirror. After hearing reports of a series of murders at the Cabrini-Green Homes public housing project attributed to the spirit, Helen and her friend Bernadette begin to investigate the local lore. While exploring the site of a recent murder, Helen discovers a room where sweets have been left for the entity, and the line between urban myth and reality begins to blur.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Helen Lyle, a graduate student, investigates the legend of the Candyman, a ghost of a murdered 19th-century artist who appears when his name is spoken five times before a mirror. While researching the myth at the Cabrini-Green Homes, she learns of his tragic history as a victim of a lynch mob. After a series of incidents, Helen is confronted by the real Candyman in a parking garage, who demands she acknowledge his legend. Following a series of violent encounters and the disappearance of a young boy named Anthony, Helen is framed for crimes and institutionalized. She eventually escapes and finds the boy in the Candyman's lair. The entity offers her immortality and a choice, but she ultimately stabs him with a flaming plank to save the boy, dying in the process. In a final twist, Helen's husband, Trevor, utters her name five times in a mirror, causing her vengeful spirit to appear and kill him.
