The story
At the height of summer, American bank robber Jimmy Cobb hides on a farm in the Beauce after fleeing law enforcement following a bank robbery in Orléans. He buries his money in a wheat field, unaware a child is watching, then takes refuge in a barn until Jessica, the estate’s wealthy heiress, feeds him. Jessica is married to Horace, a farmhand who gradually undermines her standing and creates an oppressive atmosphere for the family and staff. Once Cobb is discovered, tensions rise among the rough, insular, violent people there, whose members covet his loot, while local thugs and a pimp’s men also begin searching for him and the money.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the height of summer, Jimmy Cobb (Lee Marvin), an American bank robber pursued by law enforcement after robbing a bank in Orléans and leaving seven people dead, including a child shot through the heart, ends up at a farm in the Beauce. Cobb buries his haul of one billion old francs in a wheat field, unaware that a little boy is watching him. Having managed to hide in a barn, gun in hand and on the lookout for the slightest intrusion, he is hungry and thirsty until Jessica (Miou-Miou) eventually feeds him. She is the wealthy heiress to the estate, and in her youth she married a farmhand named Horace (Victor Lanoux), who will gradually undermine her standing and cast an oppressive atmosphere over the whole family and staff. Once discovered, the gangster becomes the focus of intense tensions among these rough people, as insular as they are violent, but eager to get their hands on the loot. He also receives advances from Ségolène (Bernadette Laffont), a woman who lives on the farm and has an uninhibited sexuality. A gang of local thugs, as well as a pimp and his henchman, also set out in search of the bandit and his loot. The situation will gradually spiral out of control when law enforcement discovers the murder of two female campers in the adjacent field. A bloodbath brings this episode to an end, with only Jessica and her son Chim surviving.
