Full plot (contains spoilers)

The taciturn young Styrian farmer Manfred (Josef Hader) is swindled out of 80,000 schillings by the shady car salesman Toni (Alfred Dorfer). To get his money back, Manfred climbs onto his tractor and drives it to Vienna. On the way, he gives Italian hitchhiker Gina (Enrica Maria Modugno) a lift for part of the journey; after an argument, her partner had thrown her out onto the road. Manfred’s first visit to Vienna is a confusing experience for the farmer: he feels lost and cannot find his way around. By chance, he runs into Gina again. The two grow closer and spend a night together. After that, they go their separate ways. The title *Cappuccino Melange* comes from a scene in which Manfred and Gina try to order drinks in a Viennese coffeehouse. When the waiter comes to take their order, neither protagonist understands him: Gina because she does not speak German, and Manfred because he cannot imagine that there are different ways of preparing coffee. After the waiter lists several coffee drinks, Gina’s ears perk up at the word “cappuccino,” and she repeats it. Manfred, however, is at a loss and says he would like a “milky coffee,” whereupon the waiter walks away, annoyed, saying, “Cappuccino, Melange.”
