The story
Caroline Daniels, a gas station attendant in rural Texas, meets Oliver Anderson, a con artist running a short change scam. The two fall in love, and Caroline agrees to travel with him to South Carolina to find her mother, Deborah. Together, they embark on a journey through the South, engaging in various scams and small bank robberies. However, tension arises when Oliver's actions become increasingly violent, leading Caroline to insist they head directly to her mother's location.

Caroline Daniels, a gas station attendant in rural Texas, falls in love with Oliver Anderson, a con artist. They travel across the South, performing scams and small bank robberies to reach South Carolina, where Caroline hopes to find her mother, Deborah. Upon finding Deborah, she is rejected by the alcoholic woman. Distraught, Caroline pushes Oliver to commit larger bank robberies to fund an escape from the country. A robbery goes wrong, forcing them to flee in a stolen car. They are pulled over by a police officer, whom Oliver kills, distressing Caroline. The pair reconciles in a roadhouse, but are surrounded by police. Oliver creates a distraction by firing into the air, allowing Caroline to escape while he commits suicide by cop. Caroline eventually reclaims the stolen money, evades the police, and buys a plane ticket to Ecuador, performing one final short change scam on a ticket agent.
