Full plot (contains spoilers)

Caroline is the daughter of the Count of Bièvres, an impoverished aristocrat who wants to marry her off. During a country outing in the Bois de Vincennes, with the storming of the Bastille imminent at this time, she meets Gaston de Sallanches, who introduces her to love. Since he is opposed to marriage, she has to resign herself to marrying Georges Berthier, an unappealing but wealthy revolutionary, lawyer, and deputy to the Convention. He is soon charged by Robespierre, and Caroline must flee to save her own head. She then embarks on a series of amorous encounters that carry her through every danger and lead her to reunite with Gaston de Sallanches, who has become one of Bonaparte’s officers.
