A busy Frankfurt journalist creates a dating profile to research online dating for a cover story, then forms an intense online friendship while juggling demands from work, family and friends.

The story

Hanna Rübenstrunk is a capable, confident journalist in Frankfurt whose new boss assigns her a cover story on online dating for a trend magazine with falling circulation. Under pressure to produce a good story quickly, she creates a dating profile on a platform for enthusiastic marathon runners, though she is not athletic. Work is only one of her demands: her family and friends continually rely on her, and she struggles to say no. After an embarrassing running date with “Speedy83,” Hanna is contacted by “Boris68”; the two quickly form an intense online friendship as she works on her story and tries to keep up with her many commitments.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Hanna Rübenstrunk, a journalist from Frankfurt, is a capable and confident woman. Her new boss, Adam Birnbaum, wants to get “Cosma,” a trend magazine aimed mainly at women whose circulation has recently dropped noticeably, back on track. He expects Hanna to write the cover story for the next issue. The topic is online dating, and Hanna has very little time to come up with a good story. To be better prepared for her research, she creates a dating profile of her own. Choosing a platform for enthusiastic marathon runners is rather absurd, since she is not athletic at all. Hanna is short on time anyway, as her family and friends constantly make demands on her in addition to her job. Her brother Philipp is in the middle of his final school exams and needs Hanna’s support, as does her sister Toni, for whom Hanna constantly has to babysit. Hanna’s mother, Keilash, meanwhile, relies on Hanna to provide for her and Philipp and to take care of all the household chores. She herself is usually busy searching for her inner balance. And, last but not least, Hanna’s friends Carla and Vivi are constantly monopolizing her time, since she can never say no. After Hanna first gets in touch with a user called “Speedy83” and agrees to go running with him—which ends embarrassingly for her—she is contacted on the site by “Boris68,” and the two quickly develop an intense online friendship. When they decide to meet for a drink some time later, Hanna is horrified to discover that “Boris68” is none other than her boss, Adam Birnbaum. She slips away at a convenient moment without Birnbaum realizing what has really happened. Still unable to summon the courage to be honest, Hanna writes to “Boris68” that she has sprained her ankle and cannot come. Carla finds out who the man is that Hanna has been writing to so industriously. She says the guy is obsessed with the truth and certainly won’t understand her lies. Even so, Hanna tries to come clean with Adam. He confides that he used to be editor-in-chief of a political magazine, but one of his journalists published a false story, for which Adam, as editor-in-chief, had to take responsibility. His transfer was the consequence. Too late, Hanna realizes that Carla is looking over her shoulder and reading along. That evening, she receives a message from Adam, writing as Boris68, saying that he has fallen in love—in real life, not with her—and saying goodbye. Earlier that morning, they had gone for a run together, and there had also been special moments between them in the past. Hanna rushes to her friend Vivi and tells her that she thinks Adam is in love with her—with her, not with “Fairy33A.” The next morning at the magazine, Hanna bursts in on an argument between Adam and Carla. Carla throws the secret he had confided to “Fairy33A” in his face, because she has believed from the start that Adam wants to fire her. Adam is shocked, and Hanna admits that she is “Fairy33A.” Hanna hands Adam her finished article. Before he can say anything, she quits her job. From that day on, she really does train for the next marathon and gets better and better. After many attempts, she also finds a new job. Carla tells her that Adam has also left “Cosma.” After Hanna makes it clear to publisher Cosma Haferkamp that “Cosma’s” current success is entirely thanks to Adam Birnbaum, she goes to Adam and reminds him that he said he wanted to settle down someday, then asks whether they could do it together. And so, at the big marathon, the two cross the finish line hand in hand, to enthusiastic cheers from their friends and relatives.
