A young boy living in poverty wins a rare opportunity to tour a mysterious chocolate factory and discover its secrets.
The story
Charlie Bucket is a kind and loving boy who lives in poverty with his family near the Wonka Factory. The company's owner, Willy Wonka, has long closed his factory to the public due to problems concerning industrial espionage, which also caused all his employees, including Charlie's Grandpa Joe, to lose their jobs. One day, Wonka announces a contest in which Golden Tickets have been placed in five random Wonka Bars worldwide, and the winners will receive a full tour of the factory as well as a lifetime supply of chocolate, while one will receive an additional prize at the end of the tour. Charlie finds a ticket and joins four other children on a tour of the facility.

Charlie Bucket is a kind and loving boy who lives in poverty with his family near the Wonka Factory. The owner, Willy Wonka, has closed his factory to the public due to industrial espionage. Wonka announces a contest where five Golden Tickets are hidden in Wonka Bars; winners receive a tour and a lifetime supply of chocolate. Charlie finds the final ticket and joins four other children—Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, and Mike Teavee—on a tour. During the tour, the other children's flaws lead to their elimination, while Oompa-Loompas sing about their behavior. Wonka reveals his troubled past with his father, Wilbur. After the tour, the four eliminated children leave with physical deformities or exaggerated traits. Wonka offers Charlie a chance to live in the factory, but Charlie refuses to leave his family. Later, Wonka becomes despondent, and Charlie helps him reconcile with his estranged father, Wilbur. During the reunion, Wonka realizes the value of family and allows Charlie and his family to move into the factory together.
