The story

A locked treasure chest sends Checker Tobi on a globe-spanning search for his childhood friend and the key to the world’s greatest treasure.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Checker Tobi receives a locked treasure chest from Frau Vogelsang, his former substitute grandmother. It sends him in search of his childhood best friend, Marina. She is now sailing around the world and has the key to the chest, which, according to Frau Vogelsang, contains “the greatest treasure in the world.” The search for her takes Tobi, among other places, to Vietnam, Mongolia, and Brazil. The journey first takes him to Sơn Đoòng Cave in Vietnam. It is the largest cave in the world, where entire trees have grown in sinkholes. In Ha Long Bay, he meets his old childhood friend, and afterward they set off together for Mongolia. There, the contrast between the heavily polluted air in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, caused by coal stoves in winter, and the vast expanses of the Gobi Desert is especially striking. Finally, their journey takes them to Brazil, to the Indigenous Jupaú people, a subgroup of the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau people. There, they receive the final clue: the “flying rivers” are large air currents over the Brazilian rainforest that absorb and carry substantial amounts of water. By climbing the ATTO Tower, they get as close to them as possible.
