In a world co-populated by real humans and fictional characters, best friends Chip and Dale became stars of a successful television series in the early 1990s before a heated argument led to their show's cancellation. Thirty years later, Chip is a disillusioned insurance salesman and Dale is a CGI-enhanced fan convention regular. When their former co-star Monterey Jack is kidnapped by the Valley Gang for his cheese addiction, the pair reunite to investigate a trafficking operation where toons are being abducted to produce bootlegs. They meet the gang's leader, Sweet Pete, a former Peter Pan actor, and a rookie cop, Ellie Steckler, who helps them. After discovering a machine that alters toon bodies, the pair faces off against the Valley Gang. During a chaotic confrontation, Dale saves Chip from a cannonball, revealing he was protected by a golden pog. The chipmunks free the bootlegged toons, including Monty, and Dale convinces the team to film a reboot of the Rescue Rangers, which becomes a success.
