Full plot (contains spoilers)
On the one hand, the film follows the historical accounts of its titular hero’s voyages of discovery, but it weaves numerous fictional events, especially romantic ones, into the plot. In this story, film-Columbus sets sail on a great voyage westward to complete the exploration begun by his father-in-law, Perestrello, the governor of Madeira. Columbus gives talks about his sea voyages before the decisive council and eventually sets off on his maritime adventures. After his long crossing and exploration of the “discovered” territory, whose “savage” inhabitants pay humble homage to the newcomer in gleaming armor, Columbus returns to Spain and is warmly welcomed in Palos de la Frontera.
