A widowed Holocaust survivor returns to Berlin and pursues a new life with an old love and a meatball restaurant.

The story

Edek Rotwachs, a Holocaust survivor who left Germany for Australia, is persuaded by his daughter Ruth to return and live with her family in Berlin. Widowed for five years and bereft of his old friends, he refuses to settle into a quiet retirement. His restless wandering and disruptive presence test Ruth’s patience. With the help of his grandson Zachy, Edek reconnects online with Zofia, a Polish love from his past, and moves in with her and her friend Valentina. He soon proposes opening a meatball restaurant with the two women, a plan Ruth doubts—particularly because she is wary of Zofia.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Edek Rotwachs is a Holocaust survivor who once left Germany to live in Australia. He has been a widower for five years, and his friends are no longer alive. His daughter Ruth persuades him to return to Germany and live with her, her husband Georg, and their son Zachy in Berlin. He soon gets on her nerves because he has no intention of sitting quietly in a corner and waiting to die. He wanders through the city, lost, while in his mind he hears the clatter of boots and the laughter of children from long ago. First, he turns Ruth’s office upside down. With Zachy’s help, he finds his Polish love, Zofia, online and moves in with her and her friend Valentina. Then he wants to open a meatball restaurant with the two women, though, as Berliners say, way out in the sticks. His daughter does not think the plan is likely to succeed, especially since she has been skeptical of Zofia from the outset. But she is wrong. Before long, the restaurant is very popular and known for its hearty home-style cooking. When a television crew wants to report on his restaurant, Edek suffers a heart attack. Fearing for his life, Ruth accompanies him in the ambulance and reconciles with him. At the hospital, she learns that he has survived the heart attack. Finally, Edek, Ruth, Georg, Zachy, Zofia, and Valentina get together for a reconciliation dinner, where Edek and Zofia announce that they intend to marry. The film ends with everyone present dancing.
