Cigalon (1935)

Cigalon owns a restaurant in a small village in Provence. For years, he has categorically refused to serve customers. But when Virginie Toffi, the former laundress at the hotel where he used to work, comes to tell him that she is going to open a rival restaurant in his village with her nephew Vergile, he is deeply stung. At first, he tries to resolve the problem by offering to marry Virginie, but she categorically refuses. From then on, war is declared. When an elegant customer sits down in his restaurant, Cigalon goes out of his way to satisfy him and calls him “Monsieur le Comte.” He does not know that the man is a shady character wanted by gangsters, who has decided to dine and dash so he can spend a few weeks in prison and lie low. But when the gendarmes come to arrest the dishonest customer, Cigalon changes his mind and refuses to press charges so as not to lose face in his village. In the end, everything will be settled, as Virginie agrees to marry Cigalon.
