A celebrated writer accepts an honorary-citizen invitation to the Algerian town where he was born, where residents have long appeared in his novels.
The story
Samir Amin is a successful writer and Nobel Prize winner in Literature who lives in Paris, away from his native Algeria. He has made a habit of turning down every invitation. That changes when he agrees to be named an honorary citizen of Sidi Mimoun, the small town where he was born. His return brings him face to face with the town’s residents, who have repeatedly served as characters in his novels over the years. The premise raises a pointed question: will revisiting the people he has drawn upon prove to be a good idea?
