A bodyguard assignment draws Ryō Saeba into a televised trap built around a network president’s murderous test.
The story
After witnessing the murder of network director Jack Douglas, presenter Sayaka Asagari hires Ryō Saeba as her bodyguard. She is trapped by a poisoned ring that cannot be removed without triggering the poison, while Megacity Television president Jack Knife—an old friend of Ryō—sets a dangerous test for him. As the network films, edits, and broadcasts events to manipulate the public, Ryō, his partner Kaori, and Sayaka seek refuge at a boarding house. Commissioner Nogami helps them escape after the network locates them, but the danger continues as they flee and allies begin to intervene.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film begins with a man named Mad Dog, Jack Knife’s henchman, executing Jack Douglas on a train. Jack Knife, president of the Megacity Television network and also an old friend of Ryô Saeba, decides to set a trap for him. He wants to test Ryô so that he can face him if he survives. To do this, he enlists the services of presenter Sayaka Asagari, who hires Ryô as her bodyguard because she witnessed the murder of Jack Douglas, the director of the network she works for. What’s more, the ring she wears is poisoned: she cannot take it off without triggering the poison, and so she cannot escape the television network. As they try to kill them, Megacity Television films the events, manipulates the footage, and broadcasts it on television. Ryô, his partner Kaori, and Sayaka decide to hide at the Haut-Château boarding house. There, Megacity spots them, but Commissioner Nogami—a contact of Ryô’s who is also in charge of the investigation—gets there first and helps them escape. As Ryô and Sayaka flee in a police car, Mad Dog attacks them in a helicopter. Umibôzu (alias Falcon), having realized that Megacity TV is broadcasting nothing but false information, decides to help Ryô escape. Meanwhile, after Ryô leaves Kaori behind so she won’t get hurt, she decides to go to the network’s building on her own to speak with the president. Once there, she is taken hostage. Miki, Umibôzu’s wife, warns Ryô, who sets off at once to find Kaori, but on the way he is attacked by Jack Knife’s militia. He fights them alongside Umibôzu, who considers himself the only one entitled to kill Ryô. After defeating them all, Ryô sneaks into the Megacity building and takes on all of Jack Knife’s henchmen, including Mad Dog, whom he kills last before going into a duel with Jack Knife on Stage Z, which contains a replica of Shinjuku. At that point, Jack reveals that the real Sayaka is locked up with Kaori, and that the Sayaka accompanying Ryô is one of their former friends, who pretended to be the presenter in order to lure Ryô into his trap.
