Full plot (contains spoilers)

In a frantic search for an actress to play the lead in a historical film based on the life of Cleopatra, producer Strombic chooses Gabriella. At first, the young woman turns down the part, but then, urged on by her mother, she accepts—while breaking off her engagement to Teddy. Filming begins, but is soon interrupted because Gabriella has a peculiar allergy to her co-star. To cure her, he pretends to be in love with her, provoking the anger of Teddy, who has never forgotten her. The two actors no longer want to act together, but the dire situation is resolved when news arrives that a perfect lookalike for the role of Cleopatra has been found in America. Gabriella leaves behind her brief career in cinema and marries Teddy, while producer Strombic must face a new round of tragicomic troubles with the arrival in Italy of the new, eccentric actress.
