The story

On the 30th anniversary of his marriage, Prince Akeem of Zamunda learns from his dying father that he has a son in Queens, New York. To secure his throne against a hostile takeover by the neighboring nation of Nexdoria, Akeem must find the boy. He travels to New York and reunites with his old friends in a local barbershop. After finding the son, Lavelle, Akeem takes him back to Zamunda. There, Lavelle must undergo traditional tests to qualify as a royal prince while the threat of Nexdoria looms, and the two cultures begin to collide.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Prince Akeem of Zamunda discovers he has a son in Queens, New York, and must find him to secure his throne against the neighboring nation of Nexdoria. He travels to New York, finds the boy, Lavelle, and takes him to Zamunda. Lavelle undergoes royal tests and is eventually named Prince of Zamunda. However, a misunderstanding leads Lavelle to believe Akeem is exploiting him, causing him to flee back to New York. Akeem eventually follows him to the U.S. to clear the air. While Akeem resolves the situation with Lavelle and his family, Semmi and the princesses defend the palace from an invasion by Nexdoria's General Izzi. Ultimately, Akeem changes the succession laws to allow his daughter to inherit the throne, Lavelle becomes an ambassador to the U.S., and Nexdoria enters a peaceful trade agreement with Zamunda. The film ends with a grand celebration of Lavelle and Mirembe's marriage.
