A small-time con artist struggles to keep his family afloat while his son dreams of escaping their partnership to become an actor.
The story
Joseph Peretti makes his living as a small-time con artist, and his scams work best when he teams up with his son, Micka. But Micka is growing weary of being treated as insignificant by his father and would rather pursue his dream of becoming an actor. The family’s finances are precarious: Joseph’s scams bring in little, while he must help support his pregnant, unmarried daughter Stella, an elderly grandmother, and his wife Val, who does not work. Their landlord, Michel Le Tallec, is demanding rent and adds to the pressure, leaving the family facing an uncertain future.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Joseph Peretti (Kad Merad), a small-time con artist, only works well in partnership with his son Micka (Kacey Mottet-Klein). The trouble is that Micka is becoming increasingly reluctant: he is tired of being treated like a nobody by his father and dreams of becoming an actor. Money is tight for the Perettis. The meager profits from Joseph’s scams aren’t enough. Especially with his unmarried, pregnant daughter Stella (Tiphaine Daviot), an elderly grandmother to support, his wife Val (Sylvie Testud), who doesn’t work, and Michel Le Tallec (Nicky Marbot), the landlord, demanding his rent—and making sure they feel the pressure—the future looks bleak.
