In 1736 Rome, two Jewish men sentenced to hang face a clergy’s effort to convert them before their execution.

The story

Rome, 1736: Angeluccio and Abramo, two illiterate Jewish men and thieves, are arrested on a charge of burglary and immediately sentenced to death by hanging. During the two days before the execution, they receive visits from confessors and, in particular, comforters from Rome’s Confraternity of Mercy of Saint John the Beheaded. The visitors aim to convert the men to Christianity, believing that conversion may allow them to atone for their sins and save their souls. As the execution approaches, the two men must contend with this religious appeal while facing their impending sentence.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Rome, 1736: Angeluccio and Abramo, Jews who are illiterate and thieves, are arrested on a charge of burglary. The two culprits are immediately sentenced to death by hanging. During the two days before the execution, the two thieves receive visits from confessors (religious clergy), and in particular from the comforters (members of Rome’s Confraternity of Mercy of Saint John the Beheaded), whose aim is to convert them to Christianity so that they can atone for their sins and at least save their souls. But the confessors’ efforts are in vain: Angeluccio and Abramo are unyielding. They were born Jewish and will die Jewish; no one can shake this conviction.
